The Story of Herb Fed Chicken and Founder Edward Wilkinson

Ed’s journey began 11 years ago when his time in London as a surveyor came to an end, and he made the heartfelt decision to return home to the serene Yorkshire countryside for a life of farming.

Growing up on a pig farm near the market town of Boroughbridge, Ed spent much of his childhood as a farmhand to his parents, gaining first-hand experience in rearing animals with a firm commitment to welfare, sustainability, and traceability.

Upon his return from the bustling city, Ed stumbled upon his aunt’s thriving business, Herbs Unlimited, which revolved around her flourishing hens and their delectable eggs. This discovery intrigued him, leading him to explore how feeding chickens, and even turkeys, a diet rich in herbs could not only enhance their quality of life but also infuse a unique taste into the birds themselves.

And so, right then and there, the vision of the country’s first Herb Fed Poultry Farm took root. Ed embarked on a journey driven by a commitment to upholding the highest standards of animal welfare. Traditionally raised birds, nurtured to grow slowly and naturally on his land, developed both the fine texture and the distinctive depth of flavour that discerning palates appreciate.

To Ed, these birds are not just livestock; they’re an extension of his family. They revel in free-range living, enjoying the freedom to roam, forage, and follow their innate instincts. He keeps his flocks small and ensures their daily comfort with handcrafted bedding. And when the sun sets, they retire indoors to keep them safe from the watchful eye of Mr. Fox.

At Grid Iron Meat we value the fact that Ed and his team take immense pride in their commitment to tradition, ethics, and the pursuit of flavour. Each Herb Fed Chicken carries the story of their heritage and the essence of North Yorkshire’s countryside in every bite. It’s not just poultry; it’s a testament to their passion for creating something truly exceptional.
